new challenges

If what really matters is the relation between body and space, that is 'the game' or jeu -according to Fusetti, then I need to get back to the basics. Strip it off clever ideological jokes and play the space, the audience, the moment. Nothing simpler to say, nothing harder to do. Only one way to solve this equation: trying out.

OK, so some ideas. As John Wright says in the world of clowning everything is a game so, probably, instead of doing all the preparation in the somewhat ceremonial way I fashioned last time, next time I shall play:

'the game of setting the space'

'the game of undressing'

'the game of dressing up'

'the game of making the audience wait while I put on make up'

'the game of seeing the audience and saying hello (the game of breaking the ice)': this I hope to do by reflecting the attitude of whomever I say hello to.

This probably should bridge the gap I fell in last time: from ceremonial making up to silly fooling which I think scared some people -who let the dog out?!

Also, in retrospect it seems to me that last time I was too desperate to fill in the silences. Next time I shall try to practice the 'doing less' and work on the potential of silence.

Now, something important here. It also seems to me that I'm often not giving enough attention to the people who are ready to laugh, play and engage in silliness, and instead I tend to focus on those people who show a harder face and sell their smiles more expensive. Next time I shall capitalize on whoever is happy to play and try to create an appealing atmosphere for the more distant ones.

Another remarkable advice, this time by Chogyam Trungpa Rimpoche “We can't start perfectly and beautifully. Don't be afraid of being a fool; start as a fool.”

Now, the language issue. I'm playing in Germany, speaking in English. Nothing I can do about my German in the next 4 days so, how about speaking slower and clearer?

And finally the more substantial stuff to include in the show:

Question A) Red nose or not red nose, that is the question.

I think I will try a more Commedia type of approach. The figure of the Innamorato, the Lover is a Commedia dell'Arte stock character, an archetype who represents the one who loves to be in Love and more than anything loves to love himself. That, with a variation towards a Rosauro, which is a more buffonesque take on the same issue: sentimentality.

Technical stuff to try out: creating a very solid mask and then taking it off -speaking in a figurative way- that is dropping the character. And the so called 'aside' that is making side comments to the audience about what's happening on stage, another way to create a sort of more intimate dialogue with them.

In short: relax, don't be afraid, loosen up, seduce them, bond with them.

Marienplatz - things (hopefully) learnt for future practice

Do's and don'ts

Do: if you're in the middle of the Town square of a big European city and you want to attract attention then you'll probably just need to spread a blanket, place a loaf of bread, a huge cucumber, a packet of sausages and a scarf in each of the blanket's corners respectively, sit down in the middle and wait. Oh yes, getting half naked to put on a costume also helps.

Don't: start rigid as a bar of iron and create no connection with the audience. When you start then throw 4 jokes that somehow insult the audience or the audience's country. They need to love you before you can start poking them up. This is specially so if the first joke consists in a word play by means of which you say Ladies and Sluts instead of Ladies and Gentlemen.

Do: Accept the challenge of a teenager, don't be scared

Don't: Be anxious, teenagers smell it and will increase the challenge

Do: Put the teenager in the limelight, encourage him to ride the show, let him melt in self-consciousness, join the audience, make comments about his performance, then gain him back and make him feel good after he's learned the lesson.

Don't: make general comments about local politicians, that's simply demagogy.

Do: breath, wait, keep quiet, sometimes that's enough to make people stay.

Don't: keep pushing with words or attempts to be funny, that just pushes people away.

Do: make yourself very ridiculous both with your costume and attitude.

Don't: play the clever guy, they'll realize you're shitting your pants.

Do: try to pull people towards you at the beginning of the show, for this probably it helps to create a bond first instead of all the jokes aimed at the audience. Make them laugh at you first!

This are lessons from my new show mental kung-fu - a toolkit of self defense techniques brought to Germany from the southern regions of Europe in the face the Great Recession. The imminent invasion of the country by desperate south Europeans has driven the German authorities to recruit self defense specialists to contain the arrival. Among the techniques there are: 'Mental Kung-Fu' and 'Wurst und brot' (bread and sausage). Still working without music or sound effects other than my own voice.

¿A qué si no frases tan largas y tanta verborrea?

The Cartagena Tribune - Policemen Tragic chorus

Another great performance of our already familiar apprentice of an idiot. OK, maybe it wasn't his best night but that was partly because a chorus of six policemen draw all the attention of the audience with their tragic performance. Another version of a classic piece, the lyrics go like this:

Stop that imbecile,

kick him out of the streets

he brings us bad luck

he doesn't sell crack

but makes us look shit

My job is authority

law is just an excuse

i speak with clarity:

Law and order in town

never seen in the streets a clown

Stop that imbecile,

kick him out from the streets

if they don't want him in his house

send him to a desert isle

Stop that imbecile

he makes us look too serious

we're just good people

it's ridiculous what you call style

it's hardly more than just vile

Stop that imbecile

The Cartagenian Times - Latest news

Two policemen try to intimidate an apprentice of clown in one of the central squares of the town. After being accused of begging for money and creating chaos (some kids were smiling), and, in an exercise of poetic arrogance, the clown takes his funky suitcase and departs from square leaving all the gold (there must have been millions in Euros) on the floor. I was there man... you can't imagine what happened thereafter: the old grannies fighting with the kids for the money, there was a brawl, men shouting, women crying... the policemen being beaten up by the manager of the bar who thought the incident was having a negative impact in his business. Pure folly...
